And on top of that, the platform will call for a ban on marriage equality nationwide. This is the platform that Romney will endorse – and it could dictate policy decisions at the highest levels. Of course, this isn’t the only area where GOP
stalwarts are woefully out of touch. Just last week, Republican Rep. Todd Akin claimed that “legitimate rape” survivors don’t get pregnant.
We won’t sit idly by and accept discourse like this. It’s not an option. With over one million members and supporters – straight and LGBT alike – we’re calling out this brand of bigotry and exposing the poisonous motivation behind it. But our movement’s message is only as powerful as our base, and right now we’re severely outnumbered and outfunded.
We need only 765 more new members to step up by midnight tonight to hit our critical members goal.
This fall, we’re honestly facing more threats at once than we have since 2004. We’ve got heavily-funded, extremist-backed marriage campaigns in Maryland, Washington, Minnesota, and more – and rights are on the line. They want to throw equality beyond our reach. Anti-LGBT candidates could grab hold of everything from state houses to the White House. And a constitutional ban on marriage equality? That’s on the table if things don’t go our way.
We’re doing everything we can to win marriage equality in states across the country and elect pro-equality candidates. But every dollar and every staff hour we put toward these fights is one that doesn’t support our work beyond the election – getting every member of Congress on record about marriage equality, making schools safer and more inclusive, or battling to end the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) once and for all.
So when all is said and done, our best option for winning – and continuing to change hearts and minds around this country – is to grow. If we don’t grow, the damage that’s done could take decades to undo.
If there was ever a time we needed a force for equality, this is it.
For victory,

Chad Griffin
President
P.S. In case you already mailed in a check or gave to HRC some other way, I want to just say thank you so much. But if you haven’t yet contributed, please make a gift now. The fight for freedom, equality, and recognition for all depends on every one of us.
