“Virginia Revisited,” a sale of art from private collections, will be held in the GCCR Gallery from Thursday, March 31st until Sunday May 1st. A portion of the proceeds from the sale will benefit Diversity Thrift.
When Craig McElroy, a native of upstate New York moved to Virginia to attend College in Peterburg, art on the walls of Richmond galleries such as Cudahy, Eric Schindler, and White Canvas caught his eye. Living in Richmond during and after college, he would buy the occasional painting. Thus began a small collection in his early twenties. Eventually he and his growing art trove moved to New York City. Over the years during trips back to Richmond, he continued to acquire work by diverse artists such as Elizabeth Slipek, Gordon Neal, Laura Loe, Richard Garrison, Andras Bality and others. Eventually he ran into a dilemma avid collectors often find themselves in—a lack of wall space. Friends have a running joke it’s time to hang work from the ceilings.
While he fully intents to continue his life-long passion (still buying from Schindler and more recently, Glave Kocen Gallery), VIRGINIA REVISITED affords Craig and other collectors like him a unique opportunity to make available privately owned art for sale at reasonable prices. Buyers will have a chance to acquire work by established artists not usually available. In addition, a portion of the proceeds from the sale will benefit Diversity Thrift. And if this frees up some wall space, so be it.
An opening reception will be held from 5 to 8:30 pm in the GCCR Gallery on Thursday March 31st. The public is invited.
The show features works by the following artists:
Gordon Neal
Laura Loe
